Dr. Robin Horst
Doctoral Graduate (2021)
Hochschule RheinMain – University of Applied Sciences and Arts
Dr. Robin Horst recalled that the most memorable moment during his doctoral studies was when he saved the first complete version of his dissertation. „It was not the final version yet, but for the first time it felt real − like something concrete was taking shape that I would actually submit“, he remembers.
A significant challenge arose early on when his first paper was rejected, which prompted doubts about the strength of his topic and whether he was „on the right track“. He overcame this by engaging in regular, honest conversations with his supervisor and mentor; these discussions helped him put the feedback into perspective, build confidence in his direction, and continue refining his work.

The PZAI supported him primarily through networking with other doctoral researchers. In fragmented organisational settings, collegial exchange does not occur automatically, and the PZAI’s discussion and networking events provided valuable cross‑institutional spaces for both professional and academic support.
He is particularly proud of two achievements from his doctoral studies: being the first computer science doctoral graduate at HSRM and having one of his early papers receive a Best Paper Award at a major interdisciplinary IEEE conference. „That recognition was an intense and motivating moment that stayed with me.“
Dr. Robin Horst was a member of the PZAI from February 2019 to September 2021 and is currently an Interim Professor for Applied Computing in Human-Centered Computing and Digital Games at Hochschule RheinMain — University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSRM).
